- sound of footsteps and crowds -

Kouki : (sighs) ... It's 10 PM already? It sure took a long time to finish...

- sound of footsteps, then piano music -

Kouki : (gasps) What is this song...? This is... this song is...! ... How interesting... even though it has delicate melody lines, but it also feels extremely powerful. This is the first time I heard this kind of song...!

Mamoru : ... hm? (smiles) Good evening, Big Bro over there. Is there something I can help you with?

Kouki : No- just...

Mamoru : Hm?

Kouki : I just came because I heard an interesting song...

Mamoru : Song? Ah, this? (playing some tunes) A good song, isn't it? Probably my best piece.

Kouki : You were the one who composed it? If that's the case, why do you say 'probably' even though you're the one created it?

Mamoru : Well, I made this song just now, impromptu. There's possibility that I'll make an even better masterpiece later. That's why, it's 'probably'.

Kouki : That song... was made impromptu? That made it all the more amazing.

Mamoru : (laughs) Thank you. Receiving compliment from someone as cool as you makes me happy. So I'm pretty good at- ... ah...

Kouki : What's wrong?

Mamoru : Ah, no... my head is going blank... huh- (collapses)

Kouki : (catches Mamoru) O-oi!? What's wrong with you all of a sudden? Anemia? Do you have a chronic disease?

Mamoru : Ah... no... (stomach grumbles)

Kouki : ... Huh?

Mamoru : ... Hung... ry...

Kouki : ... HUH??

Mamoru : Aaaa!!! I can't stand it anymore!!! When I think that I can't stand it anymore, I completely can't stand it anymore!!! I'M HUNGRY!!!

Kouki : Hungry, you said...

Mamoru : (weak laughs) Actually, I haven't been eating anything since two days ago... as I thought, human can't not eat, huh...

Kouki : T-that's obvious! If you really feel like you're at your wits end, go rush into the government office or whatever! Else you'll die!

Mamoru : Mm... I really can't stand the stiff atmosphere of that sort of public institutions...

Kouki : Before you get concerned about the atmosphere, go get concerned about your nutrition! (sigh) I understand. Come with me.

Mamoru : E?

Kouki : If you're fine with just a simple meal, then I'll give it to you. I won't listen to complains about the flavors or if you're going to be picky about it. If you're fine with that, then I'll give you some foods.

Mamoru : ......... For real?

- shifts to Kouki's house -

Mamoru : (sets down empty dish) Phew~! That was tasty! Well now~ sorry that you had to treat me to these foods~ Hm~ it's been awhile since I ate handmade foods. What's more, it's classical Japanese meals! I felt sooo happy... Thank you for the food! Mr. Cool Guy that can cook for himself... even your inner self is cool!

Kouki : You're being overdramatic. Anyone would come to be able to do simple cooking, if they've started living alone for two years.

Mamoru : No, no, no! High school boy these days... erh, you're in high school, right? There are kids who thinks it's weird to cook rice all by themselves.* I think most would prefer to help themselves to ones made in the convenience stores.

Kouki : One would have an unbalanced nutrition if they keep eating outside.

Mamoru : Yeah. Precisely what you say. (sighs) So there actually exists, huh, a high spec guy... a cool guy capable of cooking, and a kind-hearted one who will give foods to a suspicious stranger. Japan haven't lost hope yet!*

Kouki : ... Not really. It would be troublesome to let you collapse in that place.

Mamoru : (laughs) You looks like a coldhearted one from the outside, but you're actually really kind. Thank you. ... Ah, sorry, sorry. I got treated to foods before I could introduce myself... I would really be a suspicious guy like this. (clears throat) To start it over, I'm Mamoru. Fujimura Mamoru. I'm twenty years old. And you?

Kouki : I'm... Kouki. Just call me Kou.

Mamoru : Kouki, huh... Mm, even your name is a cool one.

Kouki : You... once you regained your energy, you sure get chatty... I was the one who invited you. You don't need to worry, I won't ask you to pay for the meals after coming so far.

Mamoru : (laughs) I'm not worried about that, Kouki-kun. Ah, Kou is really treating me out of kindness, I know that. Being chatty is how I usually am. Do you not like noisy guy? Sorry!

Kouki : No... I don't think mean anything deep about it. I can't get my words out so easily like that, so... I think I'm envious. Also...

Mamoru : Oh! Although it might be too late, are you interested in what a mysterious traveler like me usually do?

Kouki : No, I don't care about that. If you're feeling better, I'd like to ask you something. The song that you played earlier... you were the one who composed it, right?

Mamoru : (restrained chuckle) Don't care, you said... saying that to someone that you took home, should I say that you're brave or stupid...? Big Bro is a little worried about Kou-kun...

Kouki : Whatever, just answer me,

Mamoru : Aa~~ here comes the high and mighty attitude~ but if someone cool says it, it sure is fitting~

Kouki : Mamoru.

Mamoru : Aa... okay, okay. Just like what you said. That was my original piece. It was an impromptu, so it didn't has any name. Do you like it that much? I feel honored!

Kouki : (sigh) Having that level of a talent, why would you nearly collapse in that sort of place?

Mamoru : Mm... in any case, it seems that my survival ability and song composing skill doesn't really go together, or should I say that music doesn't give me money...

Kouki : ... 'Doesn't give you money'? You have such an ability that lets you compose songs impromptu, then you can just have it as your profession.

Mamoru : Ee?! No, no, making music as my profession is difficult! You sure said something big so casually, Kou! Ordinary office worker doesn't earn enough money to eat just because they can compose a little!

Kouki : ... Huh? Office worker?

Mamoru : ... Could you be thinking that I'm a musician that doesn't sell well or something?

Kouki : You're not...? I thought that was why you was about to collapse...

Mamoru : (strained laughs) Am not, am not~! I'm an extremely ordinary office worker! A salaryman! Well, to be more exact, an ex-salaryman. (chuckles)

Kouki : ... Ex-?

Mamoru : You see~ be shocked when you hear it! The company that I joined in went into bankruptcy two days ago.

Kouki : ... Huh?!

Mamoru : Naww~ I was shocked! When one day I suddenly went to the company, there was a paper sticked in the entranceway, saying that it had went bankrupt. I thought that that sort of thing only happened in dramas, but it actually happened for real...

Kouki : That... sure is shocking.

Mamoru : Isn't it?! Other employees also went blue. They were holding their head, panicking on what they should do. I was also thinking what I should do next... I lived in the company's dorm, but even that place got seized. I was forced to leave, but it happened all too sudden. I didn't have a decent savings or stocks, so I'm in a pinch. I was wondering where should I go to...

Kouki : ... That's why you were in that place?

Mamoru : (chuckles) As a result of the flow of events, yup. Ah, by the way, this keyboard that just became my partner this morning, it was something from a treasure storehouse called 'Omiseba'!*

Kouki : That's... how should I put it... you picked up something good.

Mamoru : You think so, huh? I was lucky! ... Mm? ... Ah, no. It's not. It should be unlucky since the moment I got lost in the street.*

Kouki : (sigh) Even if it's not in the roadside, at least there's somewhere that you can go too, right? Like going back to your parent's home...

Mamoru : Too bad. I don't have anything like that. I don't have a home after all.

Kouki : ... Eh?

Mamoru : Because of an accident that happened when I was a child... until I came of age, I was raised in an orphanage. That's why if we're talking about parent's home, that would be it for me, but... I can't go back there when I'm already this old. I don't want to get them worried. ... And because I put on airs like that, no one would come to help me if I were to collapse, that's what I thought.

Kouki : So... that's the story... sorry. That was pretty insensitive of me.

Mamoru : Oo- no, no! Don't mind it! I had come to terms with it, thinking of it as just a part of my past.* In fact, I'm feeling sorry because the one who listened to my story ended up making a sad face like that. Everyone sure is kind, huh? ... Well! Everything worked well so far, so I'm sure it will, too, in the future.

Kouki : How could you be that positive despite the situation you're in...?

Mamoru : (laughs) I don't have any redeeming point other than that, after all.

Kouki : I wasn't complimenting you.

Mamoru : Ah... is that so? ... Well then! I would feel bad to overstay my welcome, so I'll be going now.

Kouki : Go... where to?

Mamoru : Mm... the park that we passed on the way here, maybe?

Kouki : The parks around here are visited by patrolling police on fixed time. Suspicious persons would be immediately taken for questioning without exception.

Mamoru : Uwoo... as expected from elite residential area... For you to live alone in this sort of apartment, you're pretty mysterious yourself, Kou... oops, I shouldn't probe about it.* Sorry, sorry. Even so, in any case I should leave now. You won't be able to feel at ease and take a rest if I'm around, right? When you approached me, you also looked busy, so. Thank you for treating me to dinner! I'm really glad that you treated me kindly. Kou, thank you. Well then...

Kouki : Wait.

Mamoru : E-? What is it?

Kouki : You don't have any destination, do you? Then you can just stay here.

Mamoru : ... Huh?

Kouki : I live alone, so there are lots of rooms here. There won't be a problem if another person lives here. That's why, until your situation settles down, you can stay here.

Mamoru : Eh... nah, that's a very attractive offer, however...

Kouki : (chuckles) Why are you suddenly using formal speech?

Mamoru : Nah, I mean, you see...! Kou is a busy person, right? Even today, you came home late. You were walking outside at such hour after all.

Kouki : Just because I'm busy, doesn't mean that I can't have you live here.

Mamoru : Usually, when the landlord is absent for a long time, it would be a problem for a freeloader who isn't given the permission to be left all alone, right?* Ah, I might take your valuables and disappear, you know?

Kouki : Will you?

Mamoru : Ah, how could I? No matter how poor I've gotten, I've decided that I won't do anything that will make me unable to face the God... wait, we're not talking about that! It's just an example!

Kouki : You won't do that, right? Then, there's no problem. It's a waste to keep piling up topics about households. After talking to someone for awhile, I would be able to tell whether someone can be trusted or not. I think that I can trust you. And I believe in my eyes, who lets me think that way.

Mamoru : ... What an upright person... mm... I really feel saved, but... is it really okay? Kou is... a celebrity, right?

Kouki : What, so you realized after all?

Mamoru : I didn't realize at first, but... when I looked at your face and started talking with you in a brighter place, I felt that I've seen you somewhere, and it's no wonder that you're looking cool! Sorry, I don't know much about entertainment world, so I couldn't guess your name.

Kouki : Don't mind it. Even if I'm a celebrity, I actually just have that level of existence.* Since you already know, then we can get to the points. As long as you promise that you'll keep quiet about me, then I'll let you live here.

Mamoru : ... Kou...!

Kouki : What is it?

Mamoru : Nah... when I saw you in TV or somewhere else, my first impression was that you're just a cool one, but you're actually a pretty kind guy, huh! I feel moved!

Kouki : Not really... I'm not kind to just anyone. ... No, rather than being kind, I actually have a calculative mind.

Mamoru : Eh...? Is that so...?

Kouki : Yeah. In place of giving you place to live and food to eat, there's something that I'd like you to do.

Mamoru : Ee...... I don't actually mind, though. As I don't have anything at hand right now, I won't be able to pay my rent for awhile. So it's a matter of course for me to work for it as an exchange, right? ... Ah! Let me tell you first, I'm going to pass if it's crime related! I was raised with my Grandpa's message to live on without shaming the name of Fujimura family...!

Kouki : That's right. That's a matter of course.

Mamoru : ... Eeh. That was a joke. That's where you're supposed to tsukkomi me, Kou...!
